Asini is a large village and 8 km far from Nafplio. The village has its own modern life and at the same time the communication with the tourist destiny of Tolo and the adjacent coastal Asini. It is built in the plain with citrus (mandarins, oranges). It has 1,279 inhabitants. At a distance of 500m, at the foot of the hill Profitis Elias is the picturesque village of Agia Paraskevi with 200 inhabitants and with a wonderful view of the whole plain.

During the Mycenaean period, Asini was linked by road to Mycenae and was its port. Homer mentioned Asini in the «list of the ships» among the cities that had sent an army to Troy during the Trojan War.

The city was conquered in 740 BC (or 700) from the habitants of Argos, despite the heroic resistance of the inhabitants, who eventually left. They completely destroyed it, except the temple of Apollon Pythaea. The people settled in Messenia and there built a new city.

During the Hellenistic period the city of Asini of Argolis was rebuilt. Around the city was constructed a wall. In 1922, excavations of the Swedish Archaeological School in Athens revealed that there were remains of fortifications from the B millennium and the C century BC. Relics discovered in the ancient citadel, in the highest part of the peninsula. Also on the slopes of a hill of northwest discovered a Mycenaean necropolis and another of the geometric period. In the tombs were found many interesting objects. There are ruins, as well, from the Hellenistic and the Roman period. The devastation of the ancient state of Argolis it is excellent told by the poet G. Seferis in his poem «The King of Asini».
